Context of Time and Space
I saw the movie “Tár” last night. Aside from the story focused on a portion of the life of a classical conductor exquisitely portrayed by Cate Blanchett, it made me contemplate the notion of time and its relation to space.
This week as I thought about the relationship of real estate and art, I realized that my artwork had been inspired by space and particularly architecture. My earliest adult works including a video were titled “My Room” and then came a series “Donne Kuby’s Room”, and so it continued. Now becoming a realtor and building homes it all makes sense why, everything connects.
The large painting in my living room, Chambord, was painted in 1989 after a visit to the chateau in France. The beautiful rooftop is filled with gargoyles. I took plenty of pictures. One picture became the subject for the painting. The gargoyles size became imbedded in my mind and I returned to Chambord in 2007 excited to see them again in real life. Time had distorted the context of their size in my mind. Instead of finding the two of them, I found many more gargoyles of diminutive size. I vigorously searched with my family who had lived with the art for years and were visiting Chambord for the first time. They all but gave up and then I saw them. Two little guys in a corner, but my family could not see them. I positioned my hands into a rectangle cropping them as a camera would and all were surprised.
Out of context, time and space can warp our perceptions. The movie Tár is a journey in time and space. The time, from being at the height of recognition to total alienation. The space, elegant environs and magnificent halls of music to destitute warehouses depicting loneliness.
Our homes can have a great impact on our vision of who we are and what we want to be. While I envision my latest home building project, I think about how the new owners will be feeling while they sit on their porch and enjoy the gardens they will grow.
