Wow – Space! Making enormous artworks and then having it shown in the largest and most prestigious of spaces, the art museum, is a big accomplishment for any artist. Their works are elevated with the sheer expanse of the space. Cave paintings, relief walls of ancient cultures like Mesopotamia, Cambodia, and Egypt overwhelm with the vastness and accomplishment and stirs the soul. Today artists use the museum to expose their works of wonder.
I am a docent, educator or tour guide, for the Orlando Museum of Art. Today was special to me because I brought Rabbi Grace Gleason to join me and to discuss the artwork. An aha moment in conversation – feminism in art and the changes for women in conservative Judaism. Art Museums can be overwhelming, even a smaller museum like OMA but Rabbi Grace shared how in New York City she can visit the Met and look at a few pieces and come back another day to investigate others.
But why come back and back again? These are spaces that bring introspection. Like religious sanctuaries that give one pause in a frenetic world. This is how your home should make you feel when you walk through your door. You are now home and it can become that pause, and that gathering place for friends and family. Much like the museum.
